Moving Wall memorial makes a stop in Pleasant Prairie
PLEASANT PRAIRIE (WITI) -- The Moving Wall, a half-size replica of the Washington D.C. Vietnam Veterans Memorial, has made a stop in Kenosha County for the very first time.
The wall lines Pleasant Prairie Springs Park in Pleasant Prairie, deeply touching many who stop to pay their respects.
"It makes you think. It makes you think about your life and how fortunate we are," said Scott Kogutkiewicz. "It's kind of emotional. I have a nephew who was in the service. He made it back safely. Just to come here and see the people that sacrificed, gave for us -- so it's an emotional time."
Shorty, a Vietnam era veteran, is sleeping next to the Moving Wall for his 18th time. He is honoring the 58,286 American Military Personnel who were direct casualties of the war, including 1,300 who are still missing.
"These are our brothers and sisters. We're here to remember them. They were treated so badly in the 60s when they came home that nobody should ever be treated like they were. And Vietnam Veterans will never abandon another generation," said Shorty.
"People need to look at it and say that's what brought us to where we are today. That's what gave us the freedom we have," added Kogutkiewicz.
The Moving Wall will be at the park until Monday, September 16th. A remembrance ceremony will be held Saturday the 14th at 1 p.m. along with a closing ceremony at 1 p.m. on Monday.
