Vaccines required for students going back to school
RACINE (WITI) -- Wisconsin requires a multitude of vaccinations for kids kindergarten through high school, and physicians say now is the time to have your child vaccinated.
"These vaccines are safe, they are effective, and they are worthwhile," said Margaret Hennessy of Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare-All Saints.
The vaccinations protect against everything from pertussis to polio.
"It's not just protecting yourself as a student, but it's protecting people around you," said Hennessy.
14-year-old Hailey Herode took her first steps to starting high school by getting the required Hepatitis A vaccine.
"It was easy," said Herode. "It didn't hurt."
"We always want to make sure our kids are up to date on our shots and healthy with all the diseases that are around," said Hailey's mom, Tracie Herode.
Parents are able to opt their children out of the vaccinations if they have a waiver. That requires a medical, philosophical, or religious reason.
