U.S. signs treaty which aims to regulate global arms trade

NEW YORK (WITI) -- Secretary of State John Kerry was at the United Nations on Wednesday, September 25th and put his signature on a treaty which aims to regulate the global arms trade.

The agreement has many American critics. They say it will violate the rights of law-abiding gun owners.

But Sec. Kerry argues the treaty will make America safer.

"This is about keeping weapons out of the hands of terrorists and rogue actors. This is about reducing the risk of international transfers of conventional arms that will be used to carry out the world's worst crimes. This is about keeping Americans safe and keeping America strong," said Sec. Kerry.

A treaty does not become law in the U.S. until the Senate passes it by a two-thirds margin.
