Two-alarm fire on north side of Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The Milwaukee Fire Department says one fire is to blame for extensive damage in two homes. It happened just before 11 p.m. Wednesday night near 37th and Clarke. Officials believe it started on the second floor then spread to the attic and then to the house next door.
“I’m thinking that that’s going to catch on to that house and to that one,” said Jazemine Lee who lives across the street from where the fire took place, “I thought that maybe something was going to blow up a gas line or something like that. That’s when I was looking out my window, that’s what I was afraid of. But they had it under control.”
No one was injured and the fire department was able to contain the damage to just the two homes. But despite their efforts, the fire still caused thousands of dollars in damage. Officials estimate the cost of the second home at about $46,000. The home the fire department believes the fire originated in is estimated at costing close to $150,000 in damage.
Neighbors say the flames and lights brought many out of their homes, and they were unable to do anything but watch.
“I looked out my window and the house was in a complete roar like yellow blaze everywhere. It was scary,” remembered Lee, “The sky was all black, and all you seen was a devilish glow over the trees.”
Many of the houses on the block are close together, like the two that caught fire, and it worries some neighbors like Lee. Seeing a fire that intense in person has made her take extra precautions.
“It made me check my smoke alarms, it made me make sure everything was unplugged,” said Lee.
The cause of the fire is still undetermined.
