"Trying to make the best of this weather:" Snow brings out salters and sledders in Milwaukee County

MILWAUKEE -- City of Milwaukee DPW officials Monday, Jan. 15 were watching weather conditions and preparing for another salting operation on Monday night amid a winter weather advisory impacting Milwaukee County and others until Tuesday morning. Overnight, the city tackled the snow and ice with more than 100 trucks.

Since it was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, many schools were out -- and some adults did not have to report to work, but the snow meant DPW crews did, as did some parks workers.

The snow has been an uncommon sight this winter in Milwaukee -- and shoveling off walks, also uncommon.

Overnight, DPW officials deployed 122 salt trucks with underbelly plows attached. Main streets were salted first, then side streets. DPW officials said Monday they were busy watching conditions -- and were ready to change their plans if need be.

"I got my son a new sled for Christmas and we didn't get to use it last year, so we're excited to use it this year," said Shawn Gurath.

People who were equally excited went to Whitnall Park on Monday. The sledding hill there opened at noon which is unusual for a weekday. The holiday and snow combined to make a reason for the sledding hill and clubhouse to open for the day. Cross country ski rentals were available as well.

Whitnall Park is also where FOX6 News found Joel Fladwood and his lab, Molly.

"I'm trying to make the best of this weather and I'm out on a fat tire bike on the alpha trails, across the street -- and thought I'd come here and see what's going on on the ski hills," Fladwood said.

What was going on was the perfect combination of light snow on a holiday.

Meanwhile, DPW officials said they would stay on top of the changing conditions. They urged motorists to obey street signs for parking restrictions to avoid getting a ticket.
