WAUWATOSA (WITI) -- Wauwatosa Fire officials tell FOX6 News two people (a man and a child) were taken to the hospital following a fire on N. 106th Street Sunday, February 22nd. The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office says one of those people has died -- a female child. The child was three years old.
As of 2:30 p.m., firefighters were dealing with hot spots.
The Wauwatosa Fire Chief tells FOX6 News smoke was an issue at the scene -- as the wind was blowing it around.
The cause of the fire hasn't yet been determined. A damage estimate hasn't yet been released.
The American Red Cross said on Twitter says the home was "destroyed by fire." Trained Red Cross responders were at the hospital supporting the families affected.
Fire officials say cold temperatures made fighting this fire challenging.
"The house is a smaller house, and when we did arrive, there was extremely heavy fire. The Fire Marshal's been notified. It's a pretty significant fire, so they'll be coming in to help us along with our police department. The cold weather is definitely a challenge. Fortunately, it wasn't as bad as last week. We didn't have anything freezing up, but they're used to it. They did a great job," Wauwatosa Fire Department Assistant Chief Jim Case said.
The child who died after this fire hasn't been identified. An autopsy is planned for Monday.
The Red Cross tells FOX6 News the home was occupied by three generations. The grandparents who owned the home had insurance, and the insurance company is arranging hotel accommodations for six people.
