Students' senior trip delayed because flight was cancelled

MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- A group of seniors from Weston High School sent a photo to FOX6 News after they were able to make it to their senior trip destination: New Orleans. This, after FOX6 News helped the group to get on a flight out of Milwaukee late Monday, March 25th after their flight was cancelled.

It's not exactly how students from Weston High School from Cazenovia, WI, northwest of Madison, were planning to spend the start of their spring break and senior trip.

Their flight out of Milwaukee to New Orleans was cancelled on Monday, March 25th. That meant they were stranded at a Milwaukee hotel.

Chaperones say at Weston High School, students begin saving for their senior trip as freshman. So losing one day is a big problem.

"It's kind of upsetting, I mean these kids worked for four years cutting wood and doing other fundraisers to raise money for their class trip and now here we sit," said Bernie Fearing, a parent chaperone.

The group was told at 5:20 a.m. their AirTran flight to Atlanta was cancelled due to weather. But after seeing the same flight at 6:30 a.m. leave without a hitch, the group had its doubts.

"We really can't do anything. If you can't get answers, you don't know which direction to go and that's kind of what AirTran's been doing to us, they haven't given us any answers whatsoever," said Elle Fearing, senior class president.

An AirTran spokesperson tells FOX6 News, the 5:20 a.m. plane never made it to Milwaukee Sunday night due to a winter storm that whacked must of the lower Midwest. However, the airline says it has made arrangements for the group to fly out together Monday night. The airline is also waiving the group's baggage fees.

Bernie Gearing says the airline was much more helpful after the call to FOX6 News. He confirms they will indeed be in New Orleans on Monday night. All of the tours they missed on Monday have been rescheduled.
