Anti-bullying volunteers teach children about acceptance
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Volunteers from Children's Hospital and Quarles and Brady Law Firm filled Benjamin Franklin Elementary School on Thursday, October 10th, to teach lessons of tolerance and lay out a plan to help stop bullying.
Books with messages of acceptance were read to the children in their classrooms.
"The message we hope they take away is you don't have to stand for being bullied, whether you're the victim or you're a bystander watching your friends be bullied, there are things you can do to make a change," said Jenny Nichols of Children's Hospital.
The volunteers worked with Kindergarten through fifth graders. Principal Katrina Fisher says similar programs the past two years have made a big difference in her school.
"There's less fighting on the playground in the mornings and during the lunch hour and after school," said Fisher.
Students will be participating in several activities throughout October, which is Anti-Bullying Month.
