MILWAUKEE -- The end of the school year usually means fun at the pool or summer camp, but for a lot of kids in Milwaukee, it means no lunch. Salvation Army volunteers descended on downtown Milwaukee Monday, June 18th to kick off their summertime lunch program.
"It's important to be able to reach out and give back to the community in every way that's possible," Salvation Army volunteer Anthony Smith said.
Every sandwich, orange and granola bar was packed up Monday to be given to a child in need, as part of the Salvation Army's Feed the Kids Program.
"During the summertime, a lot of the kids of course don't have the school lunch programs available to them, so they literally go every day without a meal," Salvation Army Director Roger Ross said.
The Salvation Army has worked to feed kids for the past 23 years.
"We see the need every year, and we need to be out here to make sure that there are kids that are going to have meals for the summer," Salvation Army volunteer Skip Robinson said.
Volunteers packed up more than 1,000 lunches on Monday. Lunches will be handed out to over 100,000 kids by summer's end.
