FPC allows public input on selection process
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- There are empty seats on the Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission (FPC). Now, the public is getting the opportunity to play a role in filling those seats.
Ann Wilson is one of the persons being considered for a spot on the FPC. She is Mayor Tom Barrett's appointee.
In a unique move, the Common Council's Public Safety Committee allowed citizens to comment and indirectly ask questions of Wilson before the committee voted whether to confirm the appointment. Of course, Wilson got her say.
"For some time, I've been concerned about the relationship of the community and the police department and wanted to see if just maybe I could bring a different perspective," said Wilson.
The openness was an attempt to be transparent about the process and get more public input. This is especially critical since the FPC is under public scrutiny after high-profile cases, such as reinstating officer Richard Schoen who was fired for excessive force. The commission reversed its decision after public outcry.
Wilson's confirmation was almost put on hold in favor of more public vetting. But in the end, the FPC voted on Thursday to move Wilson's nomination to a vote before the full Common Council on February 5th.
