Suspect targets taverns
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee police are seeking a suspect responsible for burglarizing multiple closed taverns primarily in the Bay View neighborhood.
Authorities say the suspect targets the cash register and gaming machines.
The suspect has burglarized the following taverns: At Random, McCarty Park Sports & Grill, Palomino Bar, White House, B&B Tap, Gerry's Diamond Tap and Fred's Fast Track.
"They cleaned me out -- they got me. It's a violation -- big time violation," Fred Werner with Fred's Fast Track said.
Police believe the suspect broke into the bar through a side door, tearing off the screen. The suspect then allegedly busted in the juke box and cash register, stealing wads of money and leaving the bar within minutes.
Werner saw what was left behind the following morning.
"I seen the screen door laying on the floor. I seen my register door popped all the way open. It didn't look good," Werner said.
Police say the suspect is getting in and out of the bars in less than five minutes -- with all the burglaries happening after closing time.
"Each time it happens to you, you become more prepared. You try and tighten up all the loose nuts that they can get in with and you take more precautions," Werner said.
Werner says he will soon be installing his own surveillance cameras and being more watchful to who enters his bar.
"Rob me once, shame on you. Rob me twice, shame on me, but look out," Werner said.
