MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- From singing songs and reading books to doing arts and crafts, it wasn't an average Monday for one group of smiling volunteers. Northwestern Mutual was closed on Martin Luther King Day, and many employees honored Dr. King through a day of service.
"It`s just fun to be out here. Spend time with the kids, see their personalities and their energy and it really just supports what we`re trying to do," volunteer Regina Anderson said.
Employees volunteered at organizations across the city including Penfield Children's Center, which provides various services to children with and without disabilities.
The presence of the volunteers spread a message of kindness and respect.
"Keep the idea of equality among everybody because we`re all in this together one nation, one nation, so it`s nice," volunteer Tiffany Ellis said.
Volunteers worked in different shifts throughout the day.
"The first shift will do childcare. We have second shift doing facilities and maintenance and painting, and the third shift will do a combination of the three," Penfield Children's Center President and CEO Chris Holmes said.
Since kids also had the day off school, volunteer Regina Anderson decided to bring her son, Caleb, with her to teach him the importance of giving back.
"I think as parents, the best way for kids to learn is through example. We can tell them about it, they can watch movies and see it, but to actually be out and experience it I think that`s the best way," Anderson said.
