MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The City of Milwaukee, in collaboration with the Milwaukee Area Workforce Investment Board (MAWIB) and the United Migrant Opportunity Services (UMOS), is hosting an information sessions for unemployed individuals interested in 75 newly-created six-month transitional jobs.
Transitional Jobs participants who are successfully recruited, interviewed and employed will have the opportunity to work in any of the eight Department of Public Works divisions: Water, Sanitation, Electrical, Sewers, Parking, Fleet Services and Forestry.
The 75 workers will gain skills and experience while working under the direct supervision of city supervisors and alongside city employees and will be paid $10.10 per hour.
The informational session is scheduled for FRIDAY from 2:00 p.m. through 3:30 p.m. at MAWIB at 2342 N. 27th Street in Milwaukee.

The Mayor expressed his appreciation to the Common Council for its support and partnership as we work together to put Milwaukeeans to work.
“Given the overwhelming response we received regarding the 25 transitional job positions for individuals to fill potholes, I’m extremely pleased we are able to offer an additional 75 openings,” said Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. “Our hope is that these individuals receive quality training and experience and go on to gain full-time employment.”
Alderman Robert J. Bauman, chair of the Common Council’s Public Works Committee and the primary sponsor of legislation that helped create the program, said the workers would be recruited and screened by UMOS and MAWIB and would perform a variety of duties across Milwaukee.
“There is an abundance of public works projects these individuals will be able to work on and earn valuable on-the-job experience with, and in my view this initiative is simply a ‘win-win-win’ for the City of Milwaukee, the local economy and for the individuals involved,” he said.
Alderman Russell W. Stamper, II – also a co-sponsor of the legislation – said he is planning to meet and greet the first group of transitional jobs workers who come to the 15th Aldermanic District to work on a project.
“I can’t wait to welcome them and offer my support,” he said. “Milwaukee needs street repairs and residents need work, and I see this as an excellent opportunity to have both.”
