MILWAUKEE -- Community members are pulling together to teach children how to cross the street safely after tragedy claimed the lives of young boys in Milwaukee this year.
Peace for Change Alliance spent Saturday afternoon teaching children safety tips. The safety event was held at 51st and Meinecke.
A minivan struck Christopher Wade Jr. in that same area killing him in April.
"It's hard dealing with the death of a child because I feel like a child is innocent," said Wade's aunt, Shakila Gee.
Wade's aunt brought her child to the event Saturday, June 30.
"From the experience going through a child dying, I just feel like I want my kids to learn the proper way to cross the street so we won't have another accident in our family. I don't want to experience that with my child," said Gee.
Unfortunately, Wade is not the only child hit by a vehicle this year. Investigators say a pickup truck hit 11-year-old Israel Brown after school. And 5-year-old Robert Torres was seriously injured after a hit-and-run crash.
Groups are trying to prevent tragedies like those from happening again. They say drivers speeding through neighborhoods is still a big issue.
"Just today (June 30th), during the safety practice, cars were zooming down the streets pretty fast. They really don't care that there are kids present," said Raquel Maldonado with Peace for Change Alliance.
The organization plans to hold another safety event at Port Washington and Keefe in July.
