Marine from Port Washington among military helicopter crash victims
PORT WASHINGTON (WITI) — A Marine with ties to Wisconsin is among the 11 soldiers killed in a Black Hawk helicopter crash Wednesday, March 11th in the Florida Panhandle. A family member confirms that Kerry Kemp died in the crash that occurred during a training exercise.
FOX6 News got word shortly after the crash Wednesday about the local tie. Kemp lived in Port Washington for a couple of years. His wife is a native of Port Washington and the two met in high school.
The wreckage turned up along the coast of the Florida Panhandle and search crews found human remains.
Officials say the twin engine Black Hawk helicopter was taking part in training off the Eglin Airforce Base with a total of 11 on board when it went down -- seven Marines and four National Guardsmen.
A family member says Kerry Kemp met his wife Jenna at Port Washington High School, where Jenna was a soccer player. Kerry was voted as the one with the best laugh in his senior yearbook.
Investigators continue to search for miles around the crash site. They say the Black Hawk helicopter was in dense fog, but that would not be unusual.
The loss of 11 is bringing condolences from President Obama, and Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker.
