MILWAUKEE -- They lost everything. A five alarm fire in Riverwest earlier this month destroyed an auto body shop, and left some homeless. That fire also destroyed an art gallery upstairs, and where paintings and sculptures were ruined.
This weekend at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design held a fundraiser to raise money for the victims affected by the fire. It sold artwork that had been locked in a storage closet for decades. Some work featured goes back as far as the 1920s. The artwork was sold at $3 and $5 dollars a piece.
"It really shows that MIAD and the art community in general in Milwaukee kind of sticks by each other and are willing to do whatever is necessary to kind of help people get back on their feet," said Ian Sonsyadek, a former art student and current Riverwest resident.
All of the artwork featured was done by artists while they were still in college. Including ones when the school was called the Layton School of Art. Fox 6 even found a piece completed by the late Wisconsin artist Otto Bielefeld.
