New MPD policy
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- Milwaukee's Police Department is one of the first in the nation to develop a training program for "impartial policing."
The Fire and Police Commission approved the written version of the policy on Thursday, February 7th.
Officers will learn to recognize any biases they might have, and how to deal with people of different backgrounds.
Police Chief Ed Flynn and FPC Director Mike Tobin say this is a positive step towards a better relationship with the community.
"I can't say this in reaction to any specific incident, but we understand that we have to continually work on developing community trust in the police department," Tobin said.
"People have a right to expect their police department to learn from the past and take strong steps to prevent their reoccurance, and that's what we're committed to doing," Chief Flynn said.
They city used a consultant to develop the training program. The same consultant helped shape the program for the U.S. Department of Justice.
