Family fighting for cross walk
BURLINGTON (WITI) -- A 77-year-old Burlington man was run over while walking back from a convenience store. Now, his family wants to make sure this won't happen again to somebody else.
Shortly after 6:00 p.m. on the evening of Tuesday, January 11th, Joseph Hauswirth was taking care of his sick wife. He had crossed the street from his Burlington home to a Kwik Trip store -- his store of choice since it opened less than six months ago.
On his return trip, Hauswirth was hit by a car and died two days later at the hospital.
Now, Hauswirth's granddaughter Autumn Hoffman and other family members are pushing city leaders to install a crosswalk in the area.
Burlington City Administrator Kevin Lahner believes the accident may have happened regardless of a crosswalk being present, but acknowledges something needs to be done. He says the city had already been looking into safety improvements in the area and is close to implementing them.
"The engineers are coming up with three or four different options and we're going to be recommending some improvements down there to the Common Council," Lahner said.
As for the driver who hit Hauswirth, the Racine County District Attorney's Office is reviewing the case. Until they've finished, authorities are not releasing any details surrounding the incident.
