"Family is from there:" Milwaukee area organization keeping a close eye on Hurricane Patricia

MILWAUKEE -- As the world watches the continuing development of Hurricane Patricia, we wait, right alongside folks who are focused on finding out how their families are faring, and ultimately how they can help.

"It does scare you that your family's living there, and what could happen to them," said Nury Plascencia, has family in Patricia's path.

Friday, Nury is on the phone with family as she learns more about the path of the storm, the strongest hurricane ever in the Western Hemisphere. And one which weather experts say is preparing to pound Mexico's Pacific coastline within hours.

Nury says she has scores of relatives in the state of Jalisco, an area where a state of emergency has already been declared.

"My boyfriend's family is from there as well so it's just a lot of people that would be suffering from that if it impacted them," said Nury.

"We do have high numbers of people who have family in Jalisco. We definitely want to be as a community organization here, be a resource for the community," said Voce de la Frontera Executive Director, Christine Neumann-Ortiz.

Which Christine describes Voces de la Frontera as a hub for helping those who hope to help those impacted by the storm.

"We work very closely with the Mexican consulate and obviously can coordinate with the Red Cross as well. As a community organization to make sure that people have both information or can send resources if it becomes really apparent that there's something that people need to do," said Christine.
