Community helps stabbing victim heal: "It needs to have a good ending"

WAUKESHA (WITI) -- One week after a 12-year-old girl was stabbed 19 times, she is out of the hospital. Now, the girl who is being called a fighter, is getting help to heal from the community.

One week ago, a 12-year-old Waukesha girl crawled from the woods with a will to survive.

Police say two of her friends held her down and stabbed her 19 times.

"We kept seeing the helicopter circle back and forth, back and forth," said Heather Dornbach. "It went on for what felt like forever."

Dornbach and volunteer Laura Cameron this weekend took part in a fundraising event to benefit the stabbing victim.

Volunteer Laura Cameron says she still can't quite wrap her brain around what happened to the little girl.

As everything was unfolding last weekend -- just down the road at Infinity Baseball Fields, parents and kids sat wondering.

"Really tragic when I found out what it was all about," said Cameron. "I`m just really thankful that she is okay."

As the 12-year-old victim gets better at home, volunteers are helping ease any financial pain.

"Everything we collect will go to the victim," said Cameron. "Whatever donations people want to give, we`re happy to take."

Volunteers went from diamond to diamond this weekend selling tickets and collecting cash. All of the money raised is part of the Hearts for Healing campaign -- set up in honor of the stabbing victim.

"People really do care. If she knew how many people cared," said Dornbach.

It's caring that's coming from strangers determined to let a little girl know that she is loved.

"It needs to have a good ending," said Dornbach.

The fundraiser at Infinity Fields will continue through Sunday, June 8th.

A spokeswoman for the little girl's family says she is healing at home and has had a few visitors. She's happy to be back with her family and pets.

The little girl's family has established a "Hearts for Healing" fundraiser to benefit the girl.

The survivor’s family asks for extended blessings and love for the child by requesting homemade hearts of paper, fabric and felted wool that are purple in color and infused with prayers, love and light. The hearts will blanket the walls of the girl’s room to remind her that the power of love is greater than all else.
