City of Milwaukee winter parking regulations take effect December 1st

MILWAUKEE -- Winter parking regulations for the City of Milwaukee take effect Tuesday, December 1st, 2015 and remain in effect through March 1st, 2016. During this time, most residential streets will require alternate side night parking.

Overnight and daytime parking rules in many areas of the city change to allow Department of Public Works (DPW) plows to access more street pavement – curb to curb if possible - to remove snow and ice more effectively, efficiently, and most importantly, safely.

Posted parking rules take precedence. You're asked to check for posted signs FIRST for winter parking regulations on those streets where you plan to park.

During this winter period, most residential streets require alternate side night parking, but there are exceptions to the rule.  For example, overnight parking is prohibited on major arterial streets and bus routes.  These streets are not posted “no overnight parking.”

"For odd numbered days, park on the odd side of the street. For even numbered days, park on the even numbered side of the street," Tom Woznick, parking operations manager for the City of Milwaukee said.

Certain residential streets are restricted to parking on a specific side of the street during the winter months. These streets are posted with signs reading "No Parking" on one side of the street, either for the entire December 1 to March 1 period, or with a monthly alternation of the prohibited side.

Certain residential streets are posted "No Parking When Snow Falls 4 Inches or More."

Parking is allowed on both sides of the street, except when snow has accumulated on the street surface to the depth of four inches or more. Then no parking is allowed on the side of the street where the sign is posted until the snow has been removed -- day or night or at any time of the year.

If a snow emergency has been declared, night parking regulations are in effect from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. on all city streets.

Residents who live in an area of Milwaukee known as the “Five-Day Exception Parking Area” are allowed to park on both sides of their street for most of the year.
