Beer at the ballpark? Should alcohol be served where children play baseball?

WAUKESHA (WITI) -- A youth baseball park in the Town of Waukesha is looking to modify its plan of operation, which would include the ability to sell alcohol at the park. For some neighbors, the idea of serving alcohol at Five Diamonds Park isn't sitting well.

On a sunny day at Five Diamonds Ballpark games are in full swing. Fans cheer on their kids and cool off with a juice, water, or soda. But that limited beverage list could be changing if the ballpark owner has his way.

Alcohol could be added to the menu. The owner of the ball park is asking the Town of Waukesha to change the current operation plan -- and that would include allowing the park to sell beer and other malt beverages.

"Some of our parents come from across the country. It’s just another option to give our customers," said Tom Kelenic, owner.

It's an idea drawing mixed reaction from parents at the field.

"I don’t think it’s that big of a deal if parents want to have one or two while they’re here," said Raquel Grszecki, parent.

"It’s nice when it’s a nice summer, hot weekend, to have a beverage here or there, although it is still a children’s venue," said Christine Prucha, parent.

That is the exact reason why Sandy Hamm is leading the charge against it.

"I don’t think it’s appropriate for a youth baseball activity," said Hamm.

Hamm lives near the field and is opposed to the idea. He says life has changed on his formerly quiet property and adding alcohol to the mix would only amplify the issues.

"I don’t fault them for wanting to make money. I don’t want people to fault me for wanting to try and have a lifestyle that’s compatible with town living," said Hamm.

It's an issue that now rests with the town -- with each side hopeful they won't strike out.

Hamm is a familiar face in the area. He is the father of Paul and Morgan Hamm, two Olympic gymnasts.

It could be awhile before any final decision is made on selling beer at the ballpark.

If operation changes are approved, the park's owner would still have to apply for a liquor license.
