Officers check up on sex offenders during Halloween time
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- As kids hit the streets for trick or treat fun Sunday afternoon, October 27th, law enforcement officers were out doing "Knock and Talks" with sex offenders.
Authorities visited the homes of several high-risk sex offenders ensuring compliance with Halloween guidelines.
"They can't be out handing out candy," said Detective Frank Eder, with the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office. "We want to make it a safe environment for the kids and the families in Milwaukee County to trick or treat."
Sex offenders are also required to remain inside their residences an hour before and after trick or treat times in their neighborhoods. They are not allowed to decorate for Halloween, participate in any holiday activities and can not turn porch lights on.
Neighbors near one area officers visited say they feel safer knowing authorities are enforcing the rules.
"Makes me feel great. At least I know they're doing something to actually keep the kids in our neighborhood safe, because we really don't know they neighbor that well, but we see the sheriff over there a lot," said Diamond Williams. "As long as they're keeping the neighborhood safe, we really don't have too much of a problem with it."
Throughout the day officials also served warrants to sex offenders who have not yet registered with the Wisconsin Sex Offender Registry.
