Thousands head to Milwaukee`s lakefront to make Strides Against Breast Cancer
MILWAUKEE -- It was a beautiful day along the lakefront as thousands there were Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.
Milwaukee's lakefront turned into a large party as thousands danced along with FOX6's very own Mary Stoker Smith, who kicked off the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk.
At the 21st annual event, 6,500 came to make strides for the cause.
"Unfortunately this year in Wisconsin, over 4,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer," said Cody Allen, Event Manager.
The event raised $400,000 that goes towards cancer research like that of Dr. Carmen Bergom.
"It can help from basic discovery in the lab that can lead to new treatments," said Dr. Bergom, Medical College of Wisconsin Department of Radiation Oncology.
Suzanne Wickersham was diagnosed with breast cancer a year and a half ago.

"I was actually still in treatment this time last year, so I felt a little out of place. I didn't know if I was truly a survivor or not," said Wickersham.
After a lumpectomy and months of treatment, this year Suzanne is a survivor.
"This year has been just amazing because I truly am in remission. I'm able to enjoy all the activates and everything that's going on without thinking in the back of my mind, oh my gosh I have cancer," said Wikersham.
This walk celebrates her and thousands of other men and women who have fought and beat breast cancer.
"As they are going through this journey it can be very difficult and this day, we want them, to forget about all that, we want them to feel special," said Allen.
Wearing pink and spreading awareness and cheering on those who have fought, thousands are making strides in Milwaukee!
