10-month-old found dead in bed shared with brother
MILWAUKEE (WITI) -- The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office is investigating the death of a 10-month-old baby girl who was found unresponsive in a twin bed she was sharing with her three-year-old brother.
It happened on September 11th at a residence in the 5100 block of N. 29th Street in Milwaukee.
The Medical Examiner's report indicates an adult male place the baby down in an adult-sized bed to sleep at 10:00 a.m. Later in the day, the man was going to take the baby and a second child to pick up a third child from school. When the man went to retrieve the baby from the bed, he noticed she was unresponsive.
911 was called just after 2:00 p.m.
The Medical Examiner's report says four "grape size" bruises were discovered on the baby's back, in a possible patterned shape.
Additionally, the Medical Examiner's report indicates it is unclear as to whether the baby died as a result of co-sleeping. The baby's cause of death is undetermined at this time.
"It just hurts. It just hurts. It really hurts. How do you move forward? How can you? All you can do is put it in God's hands," the baby's great uncle, Willie Sykes said.
The report says the baby lived at the residence on N. 29th Street with her mother and two brothers. The mother's boyfriend also lives at the residence.
The whole family left the house on Wednesday morning around 7:40 a.m. to drop the oldest child off at school. Then, the baby's mother was dropped off at work.
The mother's boyfriend, the baby and another child went to McDonald's for breakfast, and then headed home.
Then, all three took a nap -- the baby and her brother on a twin sized bed, and the mother's boyfriend in another room.
When the Medical Examiner arrived at the scene, it was determined there was no electricity inside the apartment. A seven-week-old puppy was locked inside one of the bedrooms of the apartment.
The temperature inside the apartment was 80 degrees.
Otherwise, the Medical Examiner noted that the apartment was relatively neat and clean.
The Medical Examiner's report indicates the baby girl had no significant medical history.
The baby's great uncle, Willie Sykes says he watched over the baby months ago.
"When (the baby) came to us, (she) had bite marks on her from, we don't know what type of bugs, and she was dirty and unkempt," Sykes said.
Sykes says he reported the situation to Child Protective Services.
The Department of Children and Family Services says because of confidentiality, it cannot confirm or deny whether the baby is known in the child welfare system.
Police say the investigation is ongoing.
