MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee police shut down a portion of 59th Street near North Avenue Tuesday morning, July 24th. Officials were not allowing residents out of their homes as they investigated a hazardous materials situation.
Officials say a garbage truck may have compacted a household chemical, sparking a chain-reaction fire.
"It tested positive for some sort of acid. We used a neutralizing agent, and then cleaned up the remains of that," Milwaukee Fire Lieutenant Michael Zyniecki said.
Milwaukee Fire officials put the fire out, and worked with police to clean up the scene.
Officials remind people not to throw away chemicals like bleach or paint. Collection sites are meant to dispose of those chemicals.
