Total violent crime dropped more than 12 percent. Homicides had been down 12 percent in the first six months, but then there were 11 homicides in 19 days.

Police attributed some decreases to the city's 500 block watchers.

The only crime that increased was burglary, which went up nearly 4 percent compared to the same period in 2007.
