Milwaukee Public Schools is moving its spring break ahead one week, and the district could foot the bill for a few teacher vacations. The move comes after district officials find out the ACT testing date is scheduled during the district's original spring break week.
Milwaukee Public Schools requires all students to take the ACT, which the district prefers to take place during school hours. Unlike students in other districts, MPS students don't pay to take the standardized test.
The 2011 testing date is April 27, which falls in the middle of the MPS 2011 spring break week. It's a date the National ACT Board scheduled, and it can't be changed.
MPS Officials decided to move the districts spring break, so it won't conflict with the ACT testing date. The teachers union is crying foul saying some teachers already bought tickets and planned vacations.
MPS says they'd look at each case and may reimburse the vacation costs. This solution leaves many wondering if this is the best solution during a time where budget cutbacks, and teacher layoffs are occurring.
