WITI-TV, MILWAUKEE -
Mobile food vendors such as The Pita Brothers are giving fast food a new meaning. Marquette University and the Third Ward are seeing growing amounts of vendors that simply park right next to the curb and grill fresh meat and vegetables on the spot.
Vijay Swearingen, a Pita Brothers employee, says "It certainly has grown from maybe, a few years ago I was told, 150 licensed vehicles, including pushcarts and mobile vehicles, now up to 600 that were licensed this season."
Since convenience can't be the deciding factor in competition, The Pita Brothers are hoping that a mix of fresh food with different options will revolutionize lunchtime in Milwaukee. "We do some fresh made sauces of our own, hummus, tahini, southwest ranch, things that we blend on our own, and then we also make some felafel as well," says Swearingen.
You can find The Pita Brothers at the Marquette campus on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. They feed the Third Ward on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
