WITI-TV, KENOSHA COUNTY - 26 cases of salmonella have been reported in Kenosha County. The Health Department is still investigating the cause of the outbreak. Summer is the most common time for treating salmonella, but there are precautions that you can follow to keep healthy.

Hand washing is the first important rule to follow, especially after handling raw meat or eggs. Ensure that all meat is cooked thoroughly so that all of the possible bacteria is killed. When your meal is finished, be sure to put all leftovers properly in the refrigerator to prevent bacteria from spreading.

Salmonella poisoning lasts three to five days and hydration helps it pass. Many people recover without treatment, but it can be life threatening for people with low immune systems.
