WITI-TV, MILWAUKEE -
MMSD say the rainfall on June 15th was too much just minutes after the rain started coming down. To prevent the recently expanded deep tunnel from filling up, MMSD decided to dump the combined sewer and rainwater into local waterways.
The capacity of Milwaukee's deep tunnel just recently got bigger by 27 million gallons. MMSD Rep Kevin Shafer tells FOX6 the deep tunnel is now able to store 521 million gallons of combined sewer and rain water while it awaits treatment. MMSD says the Milwaukee received two inches of rain in 20 minutes.
