WITI-TV, MILWAUKEE - Former American Idol contestant Danny Gokey came back to the Milwaukee area to promote the charity named after his late wife. The Sophia's Heart Foundation has many missions, but the one closest to Gokey's heart is spreading education through art.

There were plenty of cameras to capture the moment, but it was an educator who implored people to seize it. Superintendent of St. Marcus School knew the stage with Danny Gokey standing next to the stage he had the attentions of parents and students. He made sure to take advantage of the opportunity to spread his message. "Our state has the biggest achievement gap between African American kids and white kids...The solution is not going to come from the government or the educational establishment. The solution is in this room"

It's a solution he says is in programs that engage kids, and keep them interested in school. The schools choir program was made possible through Sophia's Heart, the foundation started by Gokey.

Gokey says he's living his dream, but he's deeply concerned others won't have the same opportunity. "Milwaukee was the first area I wanted to help, and the first area I wanted to saturate with Sophia's Heart. The programming we have, the scholarship programs, the music, and arts programs."

The Sophia's Heart Foundation made it possible for the choir to practice three times a week.

Gokey says the Sophia's Heart Foundation is also starting a dance team. He says some of the kids will share with him when he returns to Milwaukee for a Summerfest performance on the 4th of July.
