WITI-TV, MILWAUKEE -
Arizona's new immigration law is igniting protests all over the country, including Milwaukee. Supporters say it's about protecting borders, but others worry it will lead to racial profiling.
At Milwaukee Voces De la Frontera human rights and labor leaders came together in a show of force against Arizona's tough new immigration law. "It is a xenophobic, racist law that violates bedrock American principles of justice and equality."
Since Arizona's Governor Jan Brewer signed the legislation last Friday it has spawned protests all over the country. Some municipalities like San Francisco are even urging residents to boycott doing business there.
The law allows police officers to question people about their immigration status, if officers have a reasonable suspicion they are here illegally.
The Latino community believes it will lead to racial profiling.
There are also lawsuits being filed, questioning whether a state has the authority to create immigration laws that is supposed to be left up to the federal government. That's one area where both sides agree.
