WITI-TV, KENOSHA - At Kenosha's Richard Bong Recreation Area there are all kinds of recreational opportunities. The recreation area has been dealing with the annoyance of theft.

Unfortunately Laura Van Slyke says the image of the World War II hero, the "Ace of Aces", and his record shooting down more than 40 aircraft is not the image Richard Bong brings to many minds. "When they hear his is an unsurpassed flying race. They kind of wonder why they didn't know, and they're a little embarrassed that they didn't know."

A sense of shame has not stopped some visitors. According to Wisconsin's Department of Transportation over the years, the recreation area's signs have been a typical target for high flying thieves.

New sign costs can run around $250, but concerns extend beyond the loss of money to the loss of history. Warmer weather means some of the area's nearly 400,000 visitors will start to make their way around the site.

Van Slyke says at the recreation center's entrance the popular picture involves people posing right in front of the Richard. She understands. She's just hoping that nothing stands in the way of people recognizing Richard Ira Bong.
