WITI-TV, MILWAUKEE - The Milwaukee Police Department's Hazardous Devices Unit does some similar things with similar equipment as in the movie The Hurt Locker. The comparison hits home to many in Milwaukee.

The movie of the year depicts something Milwaukee's bomb experts do all year. The twelve officers who work in Milwaukee Police Department's Hazardous Devices Unit are familiar with the heavy protective suit the military bomb experts wear in the Hurt Locker. The movie shows explosive experts working to diffuse roadside bombs.

In Milwaukee bomb experts often diffuse pipe bombs, suspicious packages, and old war explosives, but terrorism in America is always a threat. Milwaukee Police Department Lt. Jason Smith said, "Even watching the movie the Hurt Locker I had a little anxiety. Every time the E.O.D. Tech put the suit on and went down I started problem solving myself...We train with third party contractors who have a presence in the middle east. Our reason for doing that is learning the latest in construction of initiators, because we anticipate seeing them here at some point."

From the screen in Hollywood to the streets of Milwaukee the mission is the same. "The goal is to remotely handle everything and to keep your hands off anything that could be explosive."

The Milwaukee Police Department's Hazardous Devices Unit goes to three to four calls a month, within a 60 mile radius of the city. It partners with the federal government for funding to make the region safe.
