WITI-TV, MILWAUKEE -
The US Senate passes stopgap legislation to extend help for the jobless, meaning thousands of unemployed people in Wisconsin can breath a sigh of relief. The measure had widespread support, but was stalled for days by one senator.
The bill had been blocked by Republican Senator Jim Bunning of Kentucky, who said that spending money to extend benefits had to be paid for with other budget cuts. For those out of work who rely on benefits to get by temporarily, it was a tense couple of days.
As Wisconsin struggles with 8.7% unemployment, job center's in Milwaukee are as busy as ever.
According to the national employment law project more than 27,000 people in Wisconsin were set to exhaust their benefits this month. Now, very few people will see interruptions in their benefits, not that congress has acted.
