WITI-TV, MILWAUKEE -
It's a milestone very few organizations reach 125 years in business! That's the anniversary the Catholic Knights are celebrating January 21, 2010. Instead of treating themselves to a party, the Catholic Knights are doing a volunteer day of service for the St. Vincent DePaul society.
Instead of crunching numbers as an accountant for Catholic Knights, Cyndi Feld is spending part of her day organizing rooms for St. Vincent DePaul. Feld is one of the many Catholic Knights employees donating her time to celebrate the 125th Anniversary of the Catholic Knights.
Volunteers are spending the day sprucing up a building recently purchased by St. Vincent DePaul. The building has been home to its free meal program for about 27 years. So while some spent time taking inventory in the kitchen, others were on cleaning duty and scrubbing walls. Volunteer Brian Brugger said, "Right now we're just getting ready for people to paint this. So I'm roughing up paint and getting rid or rough spots so paint can adhere."
With all the extra hands volunteers are accomplishing work that would normally take one person weeks to do. Feld says, "Really it's a way we can serve others without doing anything huge, but taking a couple hours out of our day, that are going through things I can't even imagine."
Volunteers with Catholic Knights will also help serve food at St. Vincent DePaul's meal program Thursday night.
