WITI-TV, MILWAUKEE -
Milwaukee is home to some of the nation's most historic buildings, including the homes designed by Wisconsin born architect Frank Lloyd Wright. After years of neglect some of those homes are now getting new life, thanks to the Save America's Treasures grant program. One Wright home in the Burnham Park neighborhood received nearly $400,000.
Stepping into a Frank Lloyd Wright home is a step into our nation's history, but it's a history that will be hard to tell unless homes like on Wright Duplex are restored to their original charm.
Thanks to the Save America's Treasures grant program, the Frank Lloyd Wright home on Burnham and 28th will undergo a complete transformation. The block of homes near 28th and Burnham are the only group of the architect's designs that are still standing near each other. Frank Lloyd Wright Wisconsin Rep Mark Lilek says, "These buildings are timeless, this building was completed in 1916, but it easily could have been 1966 or 2016, they really are timeless, just a testament to the genius of Frank Lloyd Wright."
Unlike the large expensive homes Wright designed, these homes were built for more average income families. Lilek tells FOX 6, "Frank Lloyd Wright was always interested in designing homes for everybody and he had already, at this point in his career in 1916 done great, wonderful homes for people with unlimited budgets."
Restoration on the home at 28th and Burnham will likely start in the Spring of 2011, it's a matching grant so thousands must still be raised to complete the project. When you consider there were more than 400 applicants for this federal funding and only 41 received rewards, you can understand just how competitive it was.
