WITI-TV, MILWAUKEE -
A downtown Milwaukee nightclub gets to stay open for the holidays. This, despite efforts by the Common Council to suspend its license for two months.
Club 618 is known for its colorful lady bugs on the outside of the building. But it's clear the bar inside is bugging some in the city of Milwaukee. Officials have been trying to shut down the nightclub for three months due to alleged rowdiness.
Deejay Reggie Brown says he thinks there's more to the city's efforts. He believe the club is a target because most of the patrons are African American.
"It's plain racism. You can see it. People don't want this club here. It's a hip hop club. People don't want this downtown," says Brown.
There are police responses and complaints about traffic and noise at closing time. But Club 618 says its security guards are not only patrolling the block, they're going several blocks away to address any problems.
Alderman Bob Bauman refused Wednesday to talk about his push to shut the club down. A judge agreed to hear the case and agreed the club can stay open at least until she goes.
The hearing date for the club's suspension is set for January 6, 2010.
