WITI-TV, MILWAUKEE - Busted water pipes can cause a huge mess and cost a lot of money to fix, and what if the home is not occupied? Thousands of homes in the Milwaukee currently sit vacant with no heat, because of foreclosure. Low temperatures are not good for water pipes, especially if there is no heat in the home to help insulate them.

One Milwaukee home's basement is under five feet of solid ice, and that's a home that was occupied. Jim Lagina from Lagina Plumbing says, "The reality is, it's gonna break and let loose whatever the water is. So if the utility is shut off it's gonna do its immediate damage and then stop, the key is to have the sources turned off."

Jeremy Belot with the Layton Blvd. West Neighbors is a part of a program that purchases abandoned and foreclosed homes from the financial institutions, and flips them. He tells FOX 6, "We haven't seen a lot of problems yet with bursting pipes, however because we have this high number of foreclosed properties we do see properties that are not properly maintained by the lender or property owner...We've seen a number of home not be winterized properly."
