WITI-TV, BROOKFIELD - Dollars for the dance or for something else? A Brookfield East High School student investigates the student council and finds an overcharge for homecoming tickets, and what they did with the extra money has a lot of students talking.

Brookfield East's Joe Springer wanted to know why the average price for a homecoming ticket at schools in his school's conference was just $14.50 a person. But Brookfield East was charging $25.

Springer learned the school dance raised about $15,000. Some of the money paid for the deejay at the dance. Some more paid for other events at the school. But that left about $10,000 unaccounted for.

Springer requested the paperwork that showed how the money was spent. He was initially denied. So he sent a request to the administration asking for the student council's budget report. That report showed thousands of dollars raised from the homecoming dance was given to the student council's executive officers as "scholarship" money.

Brookfield East's principal has put a freeze on student council spending until further investigation. The superintendent of the school district says he expects next year's homecoming dance ticket prices to be more reasonable.
