WITI-TV, STURTEVANT - Investigators are refocusing their efforts on a crime nearly two decades old. Loved ones call her Barrie, but most remember her as Berit Beck. Her mother tells FOX 6 it's been about five years since investigators contacted her about her daughter's murder.

The murder of 18-year-old Berit Beck remains unsolved. Her mother Diane says the pain may have dulled, but not knowing why it happened and who's responsible still weighs heavy on her.

Berit left her Sturtevant home headed for Appleton July 17th, 1990 for a computer training class. She never made it there. Her van was found in a Fond Du Lac parking lot two days later, her body 5 and a half weeks later.

Lieutenant Bill Flood of the Fond Du Lac County Sheriff's Department says he worked on the case for about two years full time. Leads turned into headlines, and links turned into optimism for Beck's family. Over and over again Diane has had her hopes dashed. She says, "After a while you work hard to not get your hopes up, because the let down is so awful to deal with."

The case went cold until about two weeks ago when Diane says she received a call from state investigators. She explains, "They discovered that we've had some items that never went through DNA, and of course DNA today is a lot different than what it was almost 20 years ago."

Special Agent Tom Fassbender with the State Department of Justice wouldn't comment on the specifics of the DNA testing, but said it's been about five years since tests have been run on some of the evidence.

He says investigators continue to interview witnesses, and for the first time in years the pace of this investigation is picking up.

Investigators believe there is someone out there who knows something. They're hoping after almost 20 years that person will come forward with information that can solve this case. If you have Fond Du Lac County Sheriff's want you to call 920-906-4777.
