WITI-TV, MILWAUKEE - Gov. Jim Doyle has signed a bill passed unanimously by the Legislature to strengthen Wisconsin's child care subsidy program.

The bill Doyle signed Friday in Milwaukee is designed to crack down on fraud and abuse within the $350 million Wisconsin Shares program. The program pays child care costs for 60,000 poor families so the parents can work.

Under the bill, child care providers convicted of numerous crimes would be barred from participating in the program. It also requires additional background checks for providers.

Doyle also signed bills designed to make it easier for the state to collect money owed under the program when a provider goes out of business and to make public more information about child abuse and neglect.
