WITI-TV, LAKE GENEVA - A Lake Geneva High School athlete's career ends early, because of a rule she says she didn't know about. What will this tough lesson cost her?

To Lindsey Mikrut competitive swimming is everything. Over the the weekend the highly decorated athlete was set to complete in one of the final meets of her high school career, but she was disqualified before she even got in the pool. Mikrut says, "I was shaving in the locker room and a ref came in and when I finished a ref came and asked me who was shaving in here and I turned around and said 'I did is that a problem?' " Turns out it's a huge problem.

She was supposed to swim in four different events, but was immediately disqualified because of a rule that says there is no shaving on site at a competition. It's a rule she says she's never heard of in her four years of swimming on the Badger High School team. Mikrut said, "I just can't imagine that I'm in this position and it just hurts me a lot that I put all that work into an entire season and now I didn't even get to have my last two big races."

Mikrut was disqualified for unsportsmanlike like conduct and will not be able to compete in the state competition either.

FOX 6 spoke to a state swim official who says the rule that disqualified Mikrut is one that coaches and swimmers should be familiar with. He said the rule is a long standing rule that is all about taking the proper health precautions for those who are competing.

Late Wednesday, Mikrut was given word she will be allowed to compete in the state competition. But she'll only be allowed to take part in the relays -- not in any individual races.
