The Islamic Society of Milwaukee issued a statement of condemnation this morning. We spoke with the leader of that organization who says the killings are contrary to Islamic teaching.
Milwaukee Islamic Society President Ahmed Quereshi believes the Fort Hood rampage has nothing to do with his religion. Quereshi says, "We absolutely, completely and utterly condemn what happened...The act was a terrible, completely unjustifiable act. It's not justifiable in the name of any religion.
Quereshi is confident that some will associate Islam in general with the Muslim suspect Nidal Malik Hasan. Quereshi explains, "In the back of your mind you always, Muslims in this country after 9/11, we always hope the next tragedy does not involve someone with a Muslim name." Because the Fort Hood shooting did involve a Muslim man, there is fear of a backlash.
Mosques around the country have reported heightened security, but so far there have been no specific threats in the Milwaukee area.
The Milwaukee Islamic Society offers its condolences to the victim's families. Quereshi says this situation could be used as an opportunity to promote understanding of his faith.
