WITI-TV, MILWAUKEE -
Workers will salute the crew of the last older model of Midwest Airlines planes as a goodbye to Milwaukee, because they say 400 jobs have been lost in the process of keeping business from being grounded.
A bitter sweet moment for some as the last legacy Midwest plains take off and land most of its hometown employees touch down for the last time.
Midwest's Owner Republic Airways has opted to use more cost effective planes while retiring the older ones. Union conflicts have resulted in hundreds laid off locally, ushering in new faces and a new era for the airline.
With Southwest now flying out of Mitchell, customers have an additional choice and a possibility for additional savings. A spokesman for Southwest says their fares will be competitive and sought after, because there's no additional charge to check most baggage.
FOX 6 took a look at prices online beginning next year from Milwaukee to Phoenix. The lowest fare came in at $257 for Southwest, and $313 for Midwest. Though Midwest had cheaper direct flights and years worth of brand loyalty.
According to http://www.farecompare.com over the last year tickets along that route have dropped. This suggests that the winners so far are the consumers, but the job losses are hard to ignore.
Five people laid off from Midwest will be getting new jobs at Southwest.
