WITI-TV, MILWAUKEE - Did you know some big changes in auto insurance went into effect recently?

Wisconsin was one of two states that did not require liability insurance, but thanks to new legislation that will soon change. If you don't have insurance you'll have to get it. If you do have insurance, chances are you may need even more coverage.

Jim Moeckler from Bar & Shield Insurance says, "Before November 1st minimum liability was $25,000 bodily injury for each person, $50,000 per accident and up to $10,000 for damage you cause to someone's property." As of November 1, 2009 the coverage requirements doubled.

Moeckler believes more coverage means rates increase for consumers. Moeckler says, "I've been having customers calling me for the last 60 days cause they got a letter stating insurance rates are going up because of the state mandated coverage...we're seeing rates increase between 25% and 40% even 50%."

Forcing everyone to have insurance is an idea that Moeckler likes, but says it may not be a transition that people make easily.

The requirement for everyone to have car insurance goes into effect June 1, 2010. If you do have insurance, the changes on the type of coverage you need to be made.
