WITI-TV, MILWAUKEE - Compared to other major cities throughout the country, the city of Milwaukee consistently ranks near the top in teen pregnancy rates. Progress is being made, and you have probably seen some of the graphic displays designed to get parents and their teens talking about the problem.

Michelle Allison knows the challenges of being a teenage. She says, "I got pregnant at the age of 17. I was a senior in high school; I had my son five days after my 18th birthday...It took me 18 years to finish college, and that was in-between work, in-between raising my family, in-between making time to go to school, making sure I had somebody to watch my kids, and it was just really hard." Now, the Milwaukee mom is on a mission to help others, by encouraging discussion amongst families.

10,000 cards are being mailed to the parents of children in the United Way's local youth serving organizations. The collaborative effort between SERVE Marketing, and the United Way of Greater Milwaukee is called "If Truth Be Told". This program has got some credit for a 10% drop in Milwaukee's teen birthrate, from 2006 through 2008, according to the United Way.

Heather Aldrich is the Executive Director with SERVE marketing, and several other United Way tactics designed to serve as starting points for discussions about teen pregnancy. Aldrich says, "We want them to look at it 'n' go,'Whoa! what if this was my teen daughter? What if this was my teen son?'" Aldrich believes the hope is that this tactic will have a similar effect, and further the discussion.
