The start of a new school year is an exciting time. However, many families struggle to provide their children with the right tools for school. At Second Harvest, our main mission is feeding the hungry, but we also recognize that breaking the cycle of poverty takes more than just food. That's why we created the Backpack Buddies program. It's to provide at-risk kids with all the supplies they need to be successful in the classroom.
The Backpack Buddies program provides disadvantaged K-5, first, second and third grade children with a backpack full of school supplies. Each colorful backpack includes items appropriate for each grade level, including notebooks, three-ring binder, filler paper, crayons, markers, pencils, pens, glue stick, ruler, eraser, scissors, calculator and pencil bag... everything a child needs to do well in school.
Backpack Buddies are being sold at area Balistreri-owned Sendik's stores as part of this important effort. Backpack Buddies are 2 for $10. Net proceeds will benefit the Backpack Buddies program.
