WITI-TV, MILWAUKEE -
Officer Jose Lopez got to go on a very special trip Friday -- into the wild blue yonder with the United States Air Force Thunderbirds. Lopez got a ride in an F-16.
Lopez was selected because of the bravery he displayed in the line of duty on November 6, 2007. He was shot during the search for gang members who were involved in another shooting that evening. Lopez and his partner were critically wounded, but they both survived.
The warplane hit 400 miles an hour by the time it reached the end of the runway and then the pilot took Lopez into a 7G climb for two miles. After a little less than an hour, Lopez and his pilot were back on the ground.
"It was outstanding. there are no words that can describe the way i felt up there. It was phenomenal," said Lopez.
Lopez was awarded a special pin for pulling 9 Gs during his flight.
The Thunderbirds will be appearing at the Milwaukee Air Show Saturday and Sunday. The show begins each day at 11 a.m.
